Apen renews its collaboration with Manos Unidas for 2023

This year, our collaboration with United Hands It falls within the strengthening of rights and optimization of agricultural activities and employment opportunities in the 24 villages of the district of Ganjam, state of Orissa (India)The objectives of the 2023 project are to work in the 24 villages (5 villages are added to the 19 they have worked in so far) during the next 2 years.
What is the current situation?
Ganjam It is a district located in the northeast of the India with an area of 8,033 km2 and a population of 3.5 million people. Unfortunately, the 24 villages The area is inhabited by the poorest people in society, the tribal or casteless population, and they are found poorly connected, without access to basic services such as electricity, hygiene, health, or education.
This population is mostly made up of farmers who don't earn much income from their crops because they use archaic methods and face challenges such as climate change, soil depletion, and low prices for their produce. Furthermore, they lack organizations to support them and defend their rights. Women, in particular, bear an even heavier burden, as they must juggle working in the fields, caring for the home, and raising children.
Since 2017, the Congregation of the Sisters of Bethany has been working in this area to alleviate poverty and improve the situation of the population.
What are the objectives of this project?
The short-term goals are to work on the 24 villages over the next 2 years in three lines of work: training for the development of civil and living systems for the women, training to improve crop yields and production better prices for farmers, and training for young people so they can access to decent jobs.
The activities of training include courses for 250 women in socioeconomic rights and skills, 200 farmers in organic farming techniques and crop improvement, 13 girls in mobile sewing and 30 young people in courses in driving, engine mechanics, electricity, plumbing and mobile phone repair.
