Tactics for detecting and retaining talent in your company

The human resources manager has a truly important job within the company, as they are responsible for hiring the right person for each position. But it's not easy to spot talent in an interview, and it's even harder to convince that employee to stay with the team.

We've often heard the saying "less is more," and it's absolutely true. Sometimes we want to have very large teams, believing that all the work can be done simply because we have so many employees. But this is a misconception. There are highly talented individuals who can organize themselves perfectly to get the job done and, moreover, contribute initiative, strategy, fresh and useful ideas, and significant added value to the company. These are the talented people who help our company grow and become more productive, guiding it in the right direction and ensuring its constant renewal. Therefore, today on the Apen blog, we want to give you some tips on how to identify these talented employees and nurture them as they deserve.

How to recognize talent in a job interview?

It's not easy to recognize a talented person in an interview, but there are different "tests" to see how they react to different situations. To identify a talented person, you can ask them to describe their qualities, to see what stands out above all else or if they are completely honest, for example. You can mix professional questions with personal ones, such as asking about hobbies or their short- and long-term goals.

How to reward talent?

Once we have been able to see how they work and how they have performed their role during the first few months, we must keep in mind that:

  • It's important to follow up and find out how they feel about this new experience, to make sure they're not disappointed and if they are, to know how to fix it in time.
  • Listen to their opinion about their work and the company, in order to observe if they have initiative and what kind of suggestions they make.
  • Being flexible: this means that we won't be too rigid if you need a personal day or need to adjust your schedule or reduce your working hours, obviously all in due time, but the important thing is not the number of hours you work but that you meet your objectives and develop your talent in our company.
  • Show confidence: We must show ourselves to be open and approachable to the worker, so that they do not feel fear or distance from us and dare to tell us everything they want, without any problem.

Our company can grow with talented, creative, proactive employees who have a positive attitude, as they reflect these qualities in everything they do and can open new avenues for business and innovation. Taking care of our employees has a very positive impact on their productivity because they feel motivated and happy to work for the company.
