Ecosia: Saving the environment while surfing the web

Ecosia, It's here to stay, as it's a truly innovative idea: an internet search engine that plants a tree for every search you perform. As you know, our planet faces a major threat from climate change, which puts us all at risk. But just as we caused this problem, we also have the power to stop it.

It's not necessary to take grand actions; small gestures in our daily lives and adopting new habits will help save the planet. One of these actions is using..., Ecosia, Ecosia.org, the most eco-friendly and green search engine in existence, was created in 2009 by Christian Kroll. Its main objective is to donate 80% of its advertising revenue to tree-planting programs, for example, in partnership with WeForest, an organization they have worked with since early 2015. WeForest aims to carry out a project to plant a wall of trees across the African continent, stretching from east to west and measuring nine miles wide and 4,300 miles long.

By mid-2015, Ecosia had over 2.5 million users who had registered 15 million searches, making its success undeniable. That's why today it supports four organizations located in Peru, Indonesia, Burkina Faso, and Madagascar.

How does Ecosia work?

As we said before, use Ecosia It's not difficult at all; it's a very small gesture that performs a great function in a very efficient and simple way. The way it works and earns money is very simple: it works with Bing, a company through which it places advertisements. Thanks to these advertisements, it earns money for each click and each search, and from that money, it distributes the 80% profits to different projects.

But in addition to this method, it also has another way of making money, which is through affiliate links, called EcoLinks, which allow internet users to make donations when they shop online.

There are three ways to use Ecosia:

  • By downloading an extension that turns Google Chrome into Ecosia, as the default search engine.
  • Go directly to ecosia.org and use the search engine.
  • Install it, and this way you can keep track of how many trees you have managed to plant through your searches.
